Bodies of Four Missing Italian Divers Found in Maldives Cave

The bodies of four Italian scuba divers missing since last week have now been located inside a deep underwater cave system in the Maldives, bringing a tragic chapter in one of the country’s deadliest diving accidents closer to an end.

According to Maldivian authorities, the divers were found together in the deepest section of the cave network near Vaavu Atoll after several days of difficult search and recovery operations. The discovery followed a multinational effort involving local rescue teams, cave diving specialists from Divers Alert Network (DAN), and technical support from the UK and Australia.

The group had entered the cave during a dive expedition aboard the Duke of York liveaboard vessel. One diver, instructor Gianluca Benedetti, was found near the cave entrance shortly after the incident. The remaining victims were later identified as marine biologist Federico Gualtieri, ecology professor Monica Montefalcone, researcher Muriel Oddenino, and Montefalcone’s daughter, Giorgia Sommacal.

The recovery mission itself highlighted the extreme dangers of deep cave diving. During a previous attempt to retrieve the bodies, senior Maldivian military diver Sgt. Mohamed Mahudhee died, reportedly from complications related to decompression sickness. Officials described the cave as extremely hazardous, with strong currents, total darkness, narrow passages, and depths reaching around 70 meters.

For divers, the incident is another reminder that cave diving remains one of the most technically demanding forms of scuba diving. Even experienced divers can face disorientation, narcosis, silting, equipment limitations, and rapidly changing conditions underground. Unlike open-water dives, a direct ascent to the surface is often impossible.

Authorities are still investigating what caused the accident and whether the dive exceeded local recreational depth regulations. Recovery operations are expected to continue in the coming days.
